One of the most notable and popular songwriters in the Praise & Worship movement, Chris Tomlin has inspired millions to lift up their voices in song. His passionate songs of praise have led to many rewards and acknowledgements throughout the years. He was awarded Male Vocalist at the GMA Dove Awards in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He's been named artist of the year in 2007 and 2008. Yet, this man with so much to say through his songs had humble beginnings in the piney woods of East Texas. Chris Tomlin's BiographyChris began writing his own songs at the age of 14 in 1986, after his dad taught him to play guitar. Saved at a young age, he had a deep desire to share God's love with others. During his college years, Chris served as a worship leader for the Dawson McAlisters Youth Conferences in Texas. These were revivals specially designed to evangelize teens and college students. In the early 90's, a religious movement began in Texas that introduced an alternative to traditional worship. The Praise & Worship movement began mostly as a movement among the teens and college age students wishing to worship and praise God in a new and unique format. However, this new, less restrictive style of singing and worshipping became very popular throughout the country. People of all ages preferred this relaxed format over the traditional ways. Many churches, because of this movement, have moved to a more contemporary style of Sunday morning worship. Chris Tomlin is credited as one of the major singers and songwriters that began the Praise & Worship movement. After college, Tomlin continued to sing and write songs. In 1997, he met Louie Giglio, a pastor in Atlanta. Louie was beginning a ministry called the Passion Movement. It's also called the 268 Generation Movement based on Bibical scripture, Isaiah 26:8. Similar to Dawson Mcalister's efforts for teens. This was a way to evangelize university students. Louie asked Chris Tomlin to be part of the efforts. The Passion Movement and the Praise and Worship movement took the country by storm. They are both very popular, and so is Chris Tomlin. He began producing independent albums in 1998, but it wasn't until the release of his 2004 album, Arriving, that he gained national popularity with his music. He had four #1 hits on that album including Indescribable, Holy Is The Lord, How Great Is Our God and The Way I Was Made. He had success again in 2006 with the album, See The Morning, which hit #1 on the Billboard Christian Album Chart. In 2007, his new version of Amazing Grace, (My Chains Are Gone), was the featured in the Hollywood movie Amazing Grace. Chris Tomlin has toured with some of the greatest names in Christian music history, including Matt Redman,David Crowder, Delirious?, and Steven Curtis Chapman. He's also helped other artist. He helped co-write Kari Jobe's, I'm Singing. His passion is still sharing God's word and message through song. In 2008, he helped start a new Passion Movement church in Atlanta, Georgia, with Louie Giglio, and then this year, he released I Will Rise. Glory In The HighestThis new 12 song album combines old classic carols with four new tunes. Chris Tomlin wrote a new refrain to Joy to the World. Special guest on the album include Matt Redman, Christy Nockels and singer/songwriter Audrey Assad. Sing along to traditional favorites and enjoy learning the new lyrics as well.
How Great Is Our GodChris Tomlin is quick to remind fans that it's not about him or his music. Glory to God in the highest, that's what it is all about. No doubt Chris Tomlin will continue to sing and write songs about an indescribable God. Enjoy the album with family and friends.
